The Internal Revenue Service, a division of the Department of the Treasury, collects taxes for the federal government. If you have general questions regarding the status of your tax return, your eligibility for certain federal tax credits, or any number of tax/IRS-related questions, the IRS’s website is an invaluable source of information. Through the IRS website and your IRS account, you can read about how and when to file your return, pay your tax balance, or check the status of your refund or your amended return. Typically, you can see a refund status 24 hours after you e-file a current year return, 3 days after you e-file a prior-year return, and 4 weeks after you file a paper return.
My office is happy to assist with a variety of IRS issues, including checking on the status of a refund or amended return. My office works with the Taxpayer Advocate Service, an independent organization within the IRS.
The IRS automated hotline for refunds is 800-829-1954, and for amended returns is 866-464-2050.
If you have contacted the IRS and your issue is still unresolved, please contact my office at (203) 353-9400.
