Passports 

U.S. passports are issued by the U.S. Department of State. At travel.state.gov, you can find all the information you need before you submit your application online or at a local passport acceptance facility. You can also check the status of a submitted passport application five to seven days after applying.  

If you are traveling internationally imminently and need a passport, you can request an appointment at the Connecticut Passport Agency, located in Stamford, by calling 1-877-487-2778. Check the requirements before you call.

Visas 

U.S. citizens traveling or studying abroad may be required to obtain a visa from the country they wish to visit. The State Department maintains a detailed list of every country where you can find information about visas, the location of the U.S. embassy and any consular offices, crime and security information, health and medical conditions, and more. Since visa requirements vary widely among countries and are subject to change, I also recommend that you visit the website for each country’s embassy to confirm travel requirements.

If you do plan to travel abroad, you can participate in the State Department’s “Smart Traveler Enrollment Program” or STEP. This helps the local US embassy or consulate to contact you in the event of an emergency (such as a natural disaster or civil unrest) and can speed up the replacement of a lost or stolen U.S. passport.
