Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Jim Himes (CT-04) gave the following statement on the Senate Intelligence Committee’s new report on Russian interference in the 2016 election:
“Yesterday, the Senate Intelligence Committee released another volume in its report on Russian interference in the 2016 election. The bipartisan document includes some of the most damning findings uncovered during the investigations by the House, Senate, and Special Counsel’s office.
“The report details how Russians worked diligently to elect Donald Trump President of the United States and found easy targets within his campaign that was staffed with inexperienced Trump loyalists looking to accept help from anywhere. In addition, then-candidate Trump’s campaign manager, Paul Manafort, actively shared information with Konstantin V. Kilimnik, a Russian intelligence operative, an action which ‘represented a grave counterintelligence threat,’ according to the report.
“This is the hard truth the American people must confront: Russian Intelligence and the Trump campaign were working toward the same goals, sharing information, and accepting help from each other. It doesn’t matter if you call it collusion or conspiracy, it is a betrayal of the United States and the foundational principles of our democracy and must be condemned by all Americans regardless of political affiliation. This interference is ongoing and, while the federal government has a duty to fight against it, Americans must also remain vigilant to counter disinformation and propaganda.”
