WASHIGNTON, DC—Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) issud the following statement regarding his co-sponsorship of the DREAM Act.
“Graduating from high school should open the door to new opportunity and new responsibility, but many children of illegal immigrants instead face the possibility of deportation—being sent away from the only home they’ve ever know to a country where they may not even speak the language. Children who have played by the rules and succeeded in school should not be asked to bear the consequences of the decision made by their parents to bring them to the United States illegally. If these individuals are eager and prepared to further their education or serve our country in the military, we should most certainly work with them to provide a legal path to residency—it is the only humane response to this situation. As it is now clear that comprehensive immigration reform will not become law before the end of the year, I have cosponsored the DREAM Act and urge House and Senate leadership to pass this legislation quickly and send it to President Obama for his signature.”
“Acabar la secundaria debería abrir puertas a nuevas oportunidades y responsabilidades, pero muchos hijos de inmigrantes ilegales enfrentan la posibilidad de ser deportados a un lugar lejos del único hogar que han conocido y a un país cuyo idioma quizás no conocen. Niños que han obedecido las leyes y han sido exitosos en su educación no deberian cargar con las consecuencias de las decisiones de sus padres al traerlos a los Estados Unidos ilegalmente. Si estos individuos están preparados y dispuestos a continuar su educación o servir a nuestro país en el ejército, nosotros debemos trabajar con ellos para proveer un camino legal hacia la residencia, es la única respuesta benévola a esta situación. Como ya está claro que una reforma migratoria integral no va ser ley antes de fin de año, yo he patrocinado el DREAM Act y pido a los líderes de la Cámara de Representantes y del Senado que pasen esta legislación enseguida para mandárselo al Presidente Obama por su firma.”
