Washington, DC— Today, Congressman Jim Himes (CT-04) voted for the Build Back Better Act, which passed the House by a vote of 220-213.
The Build Back Better Act, as passed by the House, would be transformative. The bill invests in America’s future, benefiting seniors and small businesses, as well as fighting climate change. It greatly benefits families, especially those with young children, by providing universal Pre-K, reducing childcare costs, and expanding the Child Tax Credit. Some of the goals it would achieve include:
- Providing Universal Pre-K for all three- and four-year-olds.
- Capping childcare costs at 7% or less for millions of working families.
- Expanding the Child Tax Credit – putting money directly in the hands of parents.
- Raising the cap on state and local tax deductions.
- Allowing the government to negotiate with drug companies, lowering prescription costs.
- Establishing a hearing benefit in Medicare.
- Supporting small businesses by increasing access to capital.
- Extending Affordable Care Act tax credits to give more Americans health insurance.
- Investing in clean energy resiliency, development, and procurement to fight the climate crisis.
- Training Americans for the jobs of the future through education and workforce development.
- Creating 1 million new affordable housing units.
- Developing high-speed rail projects and connecting affordable housing to transit
- Ensuring sufficient funding for treating and monitoring health conditions for 9/11 responders and survivors.
“If passed into law, this bill will benefit countless Americans,” said Himes. “And we do it all in a way that raises revenue by saving money, asking the richest Americans and corporations to pay their fair share, and increasing enforcement against tax cheats.”
“The work is not done,” Himes continued. “The Senate still has to pass its version of the bill and we need to conclude negotiations that have tested the patience of the American people. But I am confident that we will get it across the finish line, building a better, healthier, more prosperous future for all of our neighbors in Southwest Connecticut and beyond.”
