Bridgeport, CT— Today, Congressman Jim Himes (CT-04) announced the creation of two summer internships that provide stipends for students who have demonstrated financial need. The Kevin J. Sutherland Washington, DC, Internship and the Jack Bryant Connecticut Internship will each provide a $5,400 stipend for a cumulative three-month summer internship in either his Capitol Hill or District Offices.
“A Congressional internship can be a life changing experience,” said Himes. “The opportunity to learn the inner workings of the federal government, while at the same time serving your community and country, has led many young people into public sector careers. But, for too long, these internships have only been available to those with the financial means to work unpaid. With the creation of these two internships, we hope to expand the opportunity to more students.”

The internships are named in memoriam of two community members from Connecticut’s Fourth Congressional District.
Kevin Joseph Sutherland was a Connecticut native dedicated to public service and policy efforts that would positively impact people’s lives. Sutherland completed an internship in Congressman Himes’ Capitol Hill office and went on to work for New Blue Interactive after graduating from American University in 2013 until his tragic death at age 24. Described by friends and family as someone who enjoyed politics and was dedicated to impactful change, his enthusiasm for public service lives on.
Jack Bryant was a community leader who impacted Stamford and all of Connecticut’s Fourth Congressional District. Beloved deacon, past President of Stamford’s NAACP Chapter, and Stamford Board of Education Member, Bryant died due to complications from COVID-19 in April 2020. Among other endeavors, Jack was passionate about connecting students with opportunities for higher education.
“Both Kevin and Jack believed that good people, working together, can make a better world,” Himes continued. “By naming these internships in their honor, we hope that their examples will inspire a new generation to service and we’ll come closer to their vision.”
