WASHINGTON, DC—Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) today celebrated the approval of a $71.82 million plan for Connecticut’s ongoing Superstorm Sandy recovery by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The plan describes how funding will be divided to individuals, families, small businesses, and others affected by the storm. Approval means this plan can now be put into action.
“Approval of our state’s plan for Sandy aid funding will allow us to finally move forward on the bigger projects we know are critical to rebuilding after Sandy and better withstanding the next disaster,” said Himes. “As we continue to recover from the worst storm in a lifetime, this funding is a welcome boost on the very long road ahead.”
The plan includes $30 million to help homeowners repair damages, $26 million to rebuild low-income housing units, $4 million to assist businesses who suffered economic losses as a result of the storm, and $4 million to address critical infrastructure needs. HUD has required that two-thirds of this money go towards Fairfield and New Haven Counties. HUD’s approval of the plan means that Connecticut can begin implementing its action plan, including taking applications for funding, architectural and engineering work, environmental testing, and construction management.
