WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) released the following statement today regarding the situation in Iraq.
“Iraq is in the throes of a brutal sectarian conflict that needs to be resolved by Iraqis. The Iraqi government must finally show leadership and take responsibility for its own country. President Obama was right to say he will not send U.S. troops back into combat in Iraq. I am deeply skeptical that air strikes or other U.S. military involvement will stop the sectarian violence. Our nation’s primary interest should be to put all parties in the region on notice that they cannot support groups or individuals engaged in international terrorism. I strongly encourage the President to work closely with Congress to determine next steps.”
