WASHINGTON, DC—Next week, all full-power TV stations will stop sending analog signals and transmit only digital signals. Beginning June 12, any television receiving its signal from an antenna will need a digital converter box for an analog television to continue free access to broadcast television channels. Viewers do not need to subscribe to cable or satellite service to continue watching basic television. Broadcast channels will still be available at no cost, but televisions using “bunny-ear” or roof-top antennas will require converters.
“The DTV transition will benefit our community by freeing up airwaves for use by community first responders so they can better communicate in times of emergency, but we must ensure everyone is aware of and prepared for the transition to digital television,” said Congressman Himes. “I urge all Fairfield County residents to reach out to friends, neighbors, and family members who may need assistance to complete the transition to digital television.”
To assist consumers with the national transition to digital television (DTV), the U.S. Government has provided coupons to defray the cost of the converter boxes necessary for analog televisions to work in the new digital system. Coupons are still available and can be obtained by calling 1-888-388-2009 (voice) or 1-877-530-2634 (TTY) or visiting the DTV website at www.dtv.gov. According to the FCC, over 300,000 Connecticut households have received coupons to purchase digital converters for televisions, but only 123,000 of those coupons have been redeemed.
