WASHINGTON, DC—Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) released the following statement regarding the Senate’s confirmation of Westport resident James Comey as Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI):
“I applaud the Senate for confirming Fourth District resident James Comey as the next director of the FBI. As we consider who should serve in our nation’s top law enforcement posts, it is absolutely essential that these leaders have a proven record of commitment to civil liberties. Mr. Comey has consistently met that test. I was particularly impressed with his ardent and outspoken opposition to domestic wiretapping, opposing then-President George W. Bush. I am confident Mr. Comey will serve us well as helps lead the effort to defend both Americans’ civil liberties and our nation’s security.
“Furthermore, I am pleased that Mr. Comey was approved by the Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support. It is vital that our federal law enforcement agencies have Senate-confirmed leaders so they can proceed with full authority in their efforts to keep our country safe. Going forward, I hope the Senate can continue to put partisan posturing aside and give the President’s nominees an up or down vote. I look forward to working with Mr. Comey in my role on the Intelligence Committee.”
