TRUMBULL, CT—Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) today visited Insports Trumbull to highlight the recent energy efficiency upgrades to the 108,000 square-foot indoor athletic complex. Insports used Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy (C-PACE) financing from Connecticut’s Green Bank - the Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority - to incorporate the latest energy saving technology that will reduce its carbon footprint.
“The cheapest, cleanest energy is the energy we don’t use. The renovations at Insports are an example of the remarkable advancements we've seen in the renewable and energy efficiency marketplace over the last few years,” Himes said. “The success of Connecticut’s Green Bank in financing energy efficiency projects like this is a testament to the effectiveness of public-private partnerships. It's time we have a Green Bank at the national level, and I will continue pushing to make that happen.”
“I appreciate Congressman Himes’ efforts to promote clean energy here in Connecticut. I've been a strong advocate for clean and renewable energy for years, and it’s an important part of my business,” said Insports President and CEO Peter Corbett. “As a public entity, I believe it’s important for my business to use that exposure to create a greater awareness for clean energy. Green, efficient energy isn’t just the right thing to do morally and ethically, it’s fiscally responsible.”
One of Himes' top priorities in Congress this year has been finding new ways for the federal government to encourage individuals and companies to reduce their energy consumption, while helping the marketplace grow and thrive. In April, Himes helped introduce legislation to establish a Federal Green Bank, modeled after Connecticut’s Green Bank, to help finance the development of clean energy and energy efficiency projects. The Green Bank Act of 2014 will create an independent, self-sustaining nonprofit corporation that would serve as a catalyst for leveraging capital to expand energy development and conservation.
The Connecticut Green Bank provided financing for Insports’ energy retrofit, which was done in conjunction with a complete renovation of the facility in 2013. The energy upgrades include a 250-kilowatt solar installation on the roof that will provide 60 percent of the facility's power needs. Insports also installed a new building wrap system that will double the facility’s insulation value and significantly reduce its energy consumption for heating and cooling. In addition, the facility installed LED lighting and air circulation systems.
During its 2013 renovation, Insports installed a 100-yard artificial turf field for football, soccer, baseball, softball, field hockey, rugby, and lacrosse. The overhauled facility also includes three regulation size hardwood courts, a restaurant and expanded concessions.
