WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) announced today two grants totaling $2,499,960 to the City of Bridgeport to remove lead-based paint and other hazards from 110 housing units. The funding, which includes $2,299,960 from the Lead Based Paint Hazard Control Grant program and $200,000 from the Healthy Homes Initiative, will be used to provide safer and healthier living environments for low- and very low-income families with children.
“As the father of two young girls, there is nothing I care about more than the health and safety of my daughters and other children,” said Himes. “These grants will eliminate hazards in children’s homes, and I look forward to working with the City of Bridgeport to ensure these homes are assessed thoroughly and that any lead-based hazards or other concerns are dealt with properly and quickly.”
Funding was awarded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The Lead Based Paint Hazard Control Grant program provides grants to identify and control lead-based paint hazards in eligible privately owned housing for rental or owner-occupants. The Healthy Homes Initiative provides funding to assess homes for a variety of environmental health and safety concerns, including mold, lead, allergens, carbon monoxide, and radon.
