WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) and Fairfield First Selectman Kenneth Flatto today announced $545,000 in funding for energy efficiency improvements in Fairfield. The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will provide formula grants for projects that reduce total energy use and fossil fuel emissions, and improve energy efficiency nationwide.
“These investments simultaneously create jobs and increase our energy security,” said Congressman Himes. “This investment means long-term energy efficiency gains that will enable us to invest in our communities and families rather than waste our money on foreign oil.”
Fairfield First Selectman Flatto has been working closely with Congressman Himes’ office on funding for a number of projects that will increase energy efficiency in Fairfield public buildings. The city expects to use some of this funding to add solar panels to both the Fairfield Senior Center and Ward High School.
“We are thrilled to learn Fairfield has been awarded this needed funding which will help us save energy, reduce costs, and make our town and school buildings even more energy efficient,” said First Selectman Flatto. “We appreciate the hard work of Congressman Himes in helping to secure this important funding.”
The funding will support energy audits and energy efficiency retrofits in residential and commercial buildings, the development and implementation of advanced building codes and inspections, and the creation of financial incentive programs for energy efficiency improvements. Other activities eligible for use of grant funds include transportation programs that conserve energy, projects to reduce and capture methane and other greenhouse gas emissions from landfills, renewable energy installations on government buildings, energy efficient traffic signals and street lights, deployment of Combined Heat and Power, and district heating and cooling systems.
