WASHINGTON, DC—Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) announced two grants today totaling $320,000 for local affordable housing organizations. Neighborworks America, a national, federally-funded affordable housing and community development organization, awarded $235,000 to the Housing Development Fund, Inc., of Stamford and $85,000 to the Mutual Housing Association of Southwestern Connecticut, Inc.
“Fairfield County is one of the best and most beautiful places to live, work, and raise a family, but unfortunately the cost of housing forces many people to commute long distances or make higher rent or mortgage payments than they can really afford,” Himes said. “Improving housing options for all residents will reduce traffic congestion, create more economic opportunity, and improve our overall quality of life, and I am pleased to see the Housing Development Fund and Mutual Housing Association being recognized for their important work.”
"We are so pleased to receive this grant from Neighborworks America,” said Joan Carty, president and chief executive officer of the Housing Development Fund. “This funding will help us grow our community lending programs. We deeply appreciate this meaningful support."
Funding was awarded through the capital grant program of NeighborWorks America, a network of nonprofits that focus on affordable housing issues. Grants may be used to make loans to homeowners to improve their homes, help potential homeowners purchase affordable housing, or construct or rehabilitate affordable housing properties. Himes supported this funding with his vote for the FY2013 continuing budget resolution.
