Washington, DC—Today, Congressman Jim Himes (CT-04) released the following statement on the passage of the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which included a version of the Lori Jackson Domestic Violence Survivor Protection Act that Himes introduced earlier this Congress:

“The Violence Against Women Act is one of the most successful pieces of federal legislation in modern times. It provides critical funding and support for organizations across the country that work to keep women safe from abuse and violence. Since its initial passage in 1994, the rate of domestic violence has declined by 63 percent.

“The reauthorization provides millions of dollars in funding for rape, abuse, and sexual assault as well as more resources for law enforcement. In addition, there is significant focus on providing support to victims, especially in native communities and communities of color.

“I am especially proud that the bill includes provisions from the Lori Jackson Domestic Violence Survivor Protection Act that I have fought for along with Senators Blumenthal and Murphy.  The changes included from our bill will most notably expand the definition of “intimate partner” to include dating relationships and also prevent people subject to emergency or temporary protective orders from possessing guns. These changes will save lives.

“Lori Jackson was 32 years old when she was murdered by her abusive and estranged husband who had legally obtained a firearm even though he was subject to a temporary restraining order. We pass this bill today in Lori’s honor with the hope that we can prevent this kind of terrible violence from destroying any more innocent lives.”
