WASHINGTON – Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) has recorded a video for the “It Gets Better” campaign. In his video message to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth, Himes tells them that while things may be difficult now, there is “an accepting, tolerant world you’ll find, where you’re appreciated for who you are.”
“At a time when so much progress is being made for the LGBT cause, including repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell at the national level, and passage of marriage equality in New York, I thought it was important to lend my voice to the effort to end discrimination against gay people—whether it happens in the courtroom or on the playground,” said Himes. “Kids deserve to know that there are people out there who care about them and support them regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or anything else that makes them feel different. I strongly encourage my fellow members of Congress to record their own ‘It Gets Better’ videos and show our LGBT youth that their national leaders care about their safety and well-being.”
The “It Gets Better” project was started in September 2010 in response to a series of suicides committed by LGBT youth. The project collects videos of personal messages to LGBT youth regarding bullying, suicide, and self-esteem. Over 10,000 people have contributed a video to the project, including President Obama and the Boston Red Sox
