WASHINGTON, DC—Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) released the following statement in response to a speech today by President Obama urging action on comprehensive immigration reform. Himes is a cosponsor of comprehensive immigration reform legislation mirrored after the bipartisan bill that passed the United States Senate earlier this year.
“Today the president reminded us that we are a nation of immigrants and called for quick action on bipartisan legislation to reform the outdated system that determines who can live, work, and be a citizen in America. I am a proud cosponsor of a bill similar to the bipartisan reform that passed the Senate—legislation that will create jobs, reduce our deficit, protect our borders, and grow our economy. The President is right—there can be no more excuses. It is time for the House to act. We should not have to wait any longer for reform that will both strengthen our country and ensure that anyone who wants to do the hard work and follow the rules can pursue the American dream.”
