Today, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence held an open hearing on the national security implications of deepfakes and artificial intelligence. Congressman Himes released the following statement following the hearing.

“Deepfakes have the potential to greatly impact our ability to trust information in our daily lives,” Said Himes.  “Many Americans now get much of their news from social media sites, where deepfakes and altered content can quickly proliferate, spreading misinformation and lies. It’s essential that the government consider how to best respond to misleading or malicious content created by artificial intelligence, while ensuring we do not infringe on individual freedom of speech or expression. This hearing is the first of its kind but I am sure that it will not be the last as we endeavor to stay ahead of the curve on this and similar issues.”
