WASHINGTON, DC—Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) released the following statement today after the passing of Congressman Donald Payne, the first African-American to represent New Jersey in Congress and a lifelong advocate of equality and social justice:

“I am deeply saddened by the loss of Congressman Payne. This was a man who dedicated his entire life to advancing the causes of liberty and equality, both at home and abroad. Payne rose up from abject poverty to become the first African-American to represent New Jersey in Congress – but he never forgot where he came from or who helped him to get there. From speaking out against grave injustices in Africa to supporting the peace process in Northern Ireland, to leading the charge in the global fight against HIV/AIDS, Payne worked tirelessly and unwaveringly to help those who often could not help themselves. Congressman Payne leaves behind a historic and inspiring legacy of civil rights advocacy and steadfast commitment to the people of New Jersey. The world has lost an invaluable and awe-inspiring leader we will not soon forget.”
