Passports

U.S. passports are issued by the U.S. Department of State. At travel.state.gov, you can find all the information you need before you go to a local passport acceptance facility. You can also check the status of a submitted passport application five to seven days after applying.

To apply for a passport, you can go to the Connecticut Passport Agency, located in Stamford. Check the requirements before you go. You can make an appointment 24 hours a day by calling 1-877-487-2778.

Visas

U.S. citizens traveling abroad may be required to obtain a visa from the country they wish to visit. The State Department maintains a detailed list of every country, where you can find information not only whether you need a visa, but also the location of the U.S. embassy and any consular offices, crime and security information, health and medical conditions and more. Since visa requirements vary widely among nations, that's a good place to find out whether you need a visa and how to get one.

For information about U.S.-issued visas for foreign citizens to travel, work or study here, please see my Immigration Services page

If you do plan to travel abroad, you can participate in the State Department's "Smart Traveler Enrollment Program" or STEP. This helps the local US embassy or consulate to contact you in the event of an emergency (such as a natural disaster or civil unrest) and can speed up the replacement of a lost or stolen U.S. Passport.
