Washington, D.C. – Catherine Chen of Greenwich is a co-winner of this year’s “President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band Concerto Competition. Catherine was selected from a field of over 120 participants in this year’s competition. In Washington for rehearsals this week, she and her parents met with Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) in his Capitol Hill office.
“It’s exciting to have the winner of such a prestigious competition come right from Greenwich,” said Himes. “Catherine has worked hard and accomplished a great deal, and we’re very proud of her.”
As winner, Catherine will appear as the band’s guest soloist in a concert Sunday afternoon and received a $2,500 scholarship. Catherine, a bassoonist, will perform the Allegro ma non troppo movement from Carl Maria von Weber’s “Bassoon Concerto in F, Opus 75.”
Catherine attends Greenwich High School and is a student at the Julliard Pre-College Program where she was also a concerto competition winner. She will attend The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia this fall.
The “President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band Concerto Competition is held annually with support from the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation and the National Association for Music Education.
