Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jim Himes (CT-04) voted to pass the Water Resources Development Act of 2024. The bill included his request to deauthorize part of the federal navigation channel in Bridgeport Harbor, clearing the way for construction of a new ferry terminal that will facilitate increased marine activity and improve maritime passenger and vessel safety.

“I’d like to thank the Connecticut Port Authority, Bridgeport Port Authority, U.S. Coast Guard, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, for their collaboration in securing this project for Bridgeport. This proposal makes it possible to build a new ferry terminal at Barnum Landing which will allow for safer, expanded service between Bridgeport and Port Jefferson, New York. Expanding transportation options for people is always a win and I’m glad to have been a part of it,” said Congressman Himes.

The Senate is expected to take up the House-passed Water Resources Development Act for consideration next week, later sending it to President Biden for his signature. The Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Ferry has been in operation for over 130 years and provides ferry service across the Long Island Sound from Bridgeport, Connecticut to Port Jefferson, New York.
