Washington, DC—Today, Congressman Jim Himes (CT-04) announced that Southwest Connecticut families will begin receiving monthly payments from the expanded child tax credit passed under the American Rescue Plan (ARP).

Over the next 12 months, working families will receive monthly payments totaling up to $3,600 per child aged zero through five and $3,000 per child aged six through seventeen. According to Columbia University’s Center on Poverty and Social Policy, the expanded child tax credit could cut child poverty nearly in half nationwide by  helping parents with day to day expenses like gas, health care, groceries, diapers, and more.

“This is an investment in our families and our children,” said Himes. “ The expanded child tax credit works to ensure that children get their basic needs covered: enough food to eat, a stable living situation, and medical care if they are sick or hurt. I’d like to thank Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro for her leadership and dedication to supporting working families. Millions of children nationwide will be lifted out of poverty because of her tireless advocacy.”

The ARP, which passed with Himes support, is a historic $1.9 trillion bill to defeat the coronavirus and mitigate the economic harm caused to the American people. The ARP provides billions to Southwest Connecticut’s families, workers, schools, small businesses, local governments, and more. Additionally, ARP will fund the administration of vaccines and the mitigation of COVID-19. Click here for more information.
