WASHINGTON, DC— Congressman Jim Himes (CT-04) released the following statement on President Trump’s nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court:

"Tonight, President Trump nominated Judge Neil Gorsuch to be the next Justice of the Supreme Court. I understand that Judge Gorsuch is respected in legal circles. However, his nomination is the conclusion of a cynical and unprecedented ploy by Senate Republicans to deny President Obama his constitutional right to appoint a Justice. The idea that a President should not nominate a Justice in his final year is found neither in history nor in the Constitution. The Senate Republicans' robbery was the worst and most consequential example of their radical opposition to President Obama.

"Fairness and comity demand that the Senate not confirm Judge Gorsuch unless he is as qualified and as moderate a jurist as Judge Merrick Garland, who by any standard of decency should occupy this Supreme Court seat."
