WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Jim Himes (D-CT) announced that Fairfield University will receive a $219,395 medical research grant as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“As we look for new and innovative ways to rebuild America’s economy, there is no doubt that our investments in medical research will not only save lives but create badly needed jobs as well,” said Congressman Himes.

Fairfield University will use the Recovery Act grant award to study a new technique for the microscopic evaluation of potential surface cancers. The technique, “low coherence enhanced backscattering tomography,” can be used to evaluate skin, colon, and cervical cancer.
