WASHINGTON, DC— Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) released the following statement regarding yesterday’s derailment of a Metro-North train in the Bronx:

“While we still do not have all the facts regarding this accident, it is the latest an worst in a string of problems that has curtailed rail service, frustrated commuters, and, tragically, resulted in loss of life. Between a derailment in my district earlier this year caused by unstable rails and loose embankments, a wide-scale power outage that resulted in severe delays and cuts to service, and now a second derailment that killed four and injured many more, it is clear that we are suffering the effects of relying on 19th century infrastructure.

“The rail lines connecting Boston, New York City, and Washington, DC, are an asset to our regional and national economy. It is unacceptable that this many accidents of this nature would occur in the span of one year. As investigators continue their research into what caused this derailment, I will continue advocating for robust infrastructure funding that will improve commutes, make commuters safer, and put Americans back to work. And in the meantime, I will keep the victims of this fatal crash and their families in my thoughts and prayers.”
