WASHINGTON, DC— Congressman Jim Himes (D-CT) today issued the following statement regarding the one year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“One year after the unprovoked and illegal Russian invasion, Ukraine has faced monumental loss,” said Congressman Himes. “Hospitals bombed, children murdered, families torn apart— these are the costs of Putin’s ruthless ambition. Yet in the face of this onslaught, the Ukrainian people have stood fiercely, unwaveringly strong. And they aren’t fighting alone.

“This is an attack not only on Ukraine, but on democracy around the globe. Allowing an authoritarian regime to violently seize another nation’s sovereign territory, committing crimes against humanity in the process, would set a catastrophic precedent for both our national and global security. The United States, alongside our friends and allies, has stepped up, offering military and humanitarian aid to support millions of refugees, help repel the Russian forces, and bring this conflict to an end. We are still staunchly committed to that cause.

“The battle is far from won, and there will be many difficult days ahead. But twelve months after the invasion, the Ukrainian people are still fighting, Kyiv is still standing, and the United States remains unflinching in our support.”

Congressman Himes is Ranking Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. He led a bipartisan delegation to Ukraine in October, 2022 to meet with President Zelenskyy and other senior officials about ongoing U.S. aid.
