Washington, DC— Today, Congressman Jim Himes (CT-04) voted in the House of Representatives for the Assault Weapons Ban of 2022 (H.R. 1808). The bill passed by a bipartisan vote. The legislation would prohibit the sale, manufacture, transfer, or possession of semiautomatic assault weapons and high capacity magazines. The semiautomatic assault weapon ban does not apply to weapons lawfully possessed before the bill’s enactment. However, H.R. 1808 does require that the owners of those weapons securely store them.
“Assault weapons are lethal firearms designed for mass-slaughter,” said Rep. Himes. “There is no reason why any civilian would need access to one of these guns for sport, hunting, or personal safety, and I am relieved that the House of Representatives has taken this first step towards halting their dissemination. Eight of the ten deadliest mass shootings of the last two decades have been committed with an assault weapon. With this vote, I recognize the victims of each of those horrific events.”
