Washington, DC – Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) issued the following statement today on the two-month anniversary of the shooting in Newtown.
“Two months later, America continues to mourn the loss of 26 innocent lives. And while the President has taken steps to reduce the threat of gun violence in our communities, I am disappointed by Congress’ continued unwillingness to pass common-sense legislation to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill.
Today, hundreds of my constituents are marching on Hartford to demand their state and federal leaders make gun violence prevention a priority. While I cannot be there with them today, I am encouraged by their commitment to this issue and stand in solidarity with all those who seek an end to senseless violence.
As the President noted in his State of the Union address earlier this week, the victims of Newtown, Aurora, Tucson, and so many other tragedies deserve a vote. In the weeks and months ahead, I will continue pushing my colleagues in Congress to send gun violence prevention measures to the President’s desk.”
