WASHINGTON, DC—With the President’s National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform scheduled to send recommendations to Congress this coming Wednesday, Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) released the following statement.
“I am eager to read the recommendations of the President’s Fiscal Commission and look forward to bipartisan work to implement some version of their work, informed by other proposals that have been made and which are to be made this week. While short-term recovery may require continued expansionary monetary and fiscal policy, our long-term prosperity depends on reducing our federal debt and reforming Social Security and Medicare so that they are sustainable. None of this will be pleasant or easy, and it requires a sincere willingness from leaders on both sides of the aisle to consider proposals outside of their comfort zone. I urge my colleagues to examine this week’s proposal with an open mind and look for ways we can support rather than thwart this absolutely essential work."
