Washington, DC – Congressman Jim Himes, Ranking Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, today made the following statement regarding the passage of a continuing resolution to extend current funding of government agencies until early March. Congressman Himes voted for the legislation, which passed with a vote of 314-108.
“While I am relieved the government did not shut down this week, I am deeply concerned that continuing to dole out funding in short-term increments erodes our defense capabilities and readiness,” said Congressman Himes. “Passing Appropriations legislation is the most basic responsibility of the Congress, and that we are once again passing a continuing resolution should not be celebrated. Republican leaders’ failure to work with Democrats to pass full year funding bills projects instability to our adversaries at a time of heightened global risk, particularly when coupled with a refusal to pass supplemental funding for our allies in Ukraine, the Middle East, and the Indo-pacific.”
“It is my sincere hope that my Republican colleagues will, with the awareness that they are one component of a multi-branch, bipartisan government, cease their infighting and work with Democrats to fund the government and provide certainty to U.S. government agencies that are working to support and protect the American people.”
Last month, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin issued a letter highlighting concerns over the security implications of passing a continuing resolution rather than a full funding bill.
