Reps. Himes announces $765,000 CARES Act grant for Waterbury-Oxford Airport

October 1, 2020
Press Release

Oxford, CT – Today, Congressman Jim Himes (CT-04) announced that the Waterbury-Oxford Airport received a $765,054.00 CARES ACT grant from the Federal Aviation Administration, which will provide a 6,360 foot long fence to prevent wildlife hazards and ensure safe airport operations.

“Waterbury-Oxford Airport is an essential economic contributor to Southwest Connecticut’s economy,” said Congressman Himes. “Fencing will ensure the airport is operating at full capacity without interference from wildlife. I was proud to co-sponsor and vote for the CARES Act and will continue to prioritize bringing federal dollars to the district.”

"It is always in the best interest of the wildlife and commercial air activity to be separate. This fence will ensure the safety of both,” said Oxford’s First Selectman George Temple. “ Thank you, Congressman Himes, for your efforts in obtaining this grant."

Waterbury-Oxford Airport is located in the town of Oxford and has Connecticut’s highest concentration of general aviation activity. The airport contributes over $230 million in economic activity each year, and supports over 2000 jobs.

Congressman Himes co-sponsored and voted for the CARES Act, which was signed into law on March 27, 2020. This wide-ranging economic rescue package provided rapid and meaningful relief for individuals and businesses.
