Congressman Himes Statement on Passage of Heroes Act
“Today, I voted to pass the Heroes Act, a bill designed to ease the suffering of millions of Americans and increase support for the testing and tracing regime we need to safely reopen our economy. It sends money directly to those most in need: essential workers, those who have lost their jobs and are on the precipice of losing their homes, and the vital first responders employed by our state and local governments. Our neighbors are sacrificing every day, putting their safety and livelihoods on the line to battle the relentless virus that has already taken the lives of more than 85,000 of our fellow Americans, including more than 3,000 here in Connecticut. It is the duty of the federal government to help.
“The Senate Majority Leader has made it clear that he doesn’t think the situation is urgent enough to warrant action. He has even floated the idea of allowing states to go bankrupt. This attitude is cruel and dangerous. My colleagues and I will not stand idly by while Americans lose their jobs, homes, and lives. The House has acted. I hope the Senate will act before any more damage is done.”
