CONGRESSMAN JIM HIMES

Representing the 4th District of Connecticut

Statement of Congressman Jim Himes on the Passage of the Continuing Resolution

September 29, 2016
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Jim Himes (CT-04) made the following statement about his vote for the continuing resolution last night and the House passage of aid for Flint Michigan:

Last night, I voted for a continuing resolution to keep the federal government from shutting down at the end of September and funding our fight against Zika. While the bill itself was good, we shouldn’t be in the position of passing last-minute legislation.

When Speaker Ryan assumed his position, we were told that the era of Congress lurching from cliff to cliff and deadline to deadline was past, and yet here we are again, doing work we’ve had all year to work on with only hours to spare. That’s not the way the American people expect us to run their government and it needs to stop.

Earlier today, Congress passed the Water Resources Development Act of 2016, which included money to help people in Flint, Michigan who continue to suffer from the fallouts of lead in their water, one of the major sticking points in passing the continuing resolution. I voted for this legislation.
