The benefits of immigration reform are many. Immigration reform will encourage the world’s best and brightest to build their businesses here by providing “startup” visas for foreign entrepreneurs and increasing the number of H-1B visas for STEM graduates. In doing so, immigration reform will increase the earnings of all Americans by $470 billion and generate 1.2 million new jobs. Comprehensive immigration reform will also add $1.4 trillion to GDP over the next 10 years and cut deficits by $175 billion. And by making sure these immigrants are paying their full and fair share of taxes, we will bring in an additional $140 billion in new revenue over the next 10 years. This money can go towards improving our schools, investing in infrastructure projects that create jobs, and extending the solvency of Medicare.
Just one week into office, President Trump signed executive orders regarding immigration, border security and sanctuary cities. If he were actually serious about the safety of our citizens, however, he would work with Congress to create a well thought-out and comprehensive plan to increase the security of our nation.
Instead, Trump continues to push extreme ideas such as a border wall that won’t provide more security, extreme enforcement that will likely lead to raids in our cities and families being torn apart at the border, and policies that will return people back to dangerous countries with no protection.
These actions undermine our leadership and values around the globe, leading to a less secure world and a less secure America. Coupled with the orders we expect him to issue tomorrow that will turn away refugees fleeing terror, these orders are antithetical to our core values as Americans and must be condemned
